Experts Views on the Value of Business Plans: Andrea Cockerton and Carlos Slim

Andrea Cockerton
Andrea Cockerton is Founder, Artist Director, and Pitch Consultant for The Dowsing Sound Collective. She also founded two other active companies, The Dosoco Foundation and Mudhut. Since 2004, she has advised nearly 500 entrepreneurs, CEOs, partners, trustees, and directors on “business critical pitches”. In a 2010 interview, when discussing a prior client’s success, Andrea commented that in her process, she sought to quiz her clients on everything an investor would ask because in any potential connection, investors would dig deeply to find out information about businesses. She stated that they “needed to know their facts inside out, and to prioritize in terms of what they wanted to say” (BrianofCambridge, 2010). This is absolutely a great suggestion. When crafting a business plan, it’s very important to know your business and be able to describe and provide details about the business better than anyone else. The pitch is arguably one of the most important parts of the business plan because if you cannot make it past the pitch, the full plan will never be viewed.

Carlos Slim
Carlos Slim is a Mexican business owner and is currently Forbes’s 4th Wealthiest Person in the World. Carlos has 10 business principles that he uses in his business. They include having simple organizational structures, minimal hierarchical levels, maintaining strength in good times to be able to avert drastic adjustments in times of crisis, and reinvesting profits. The principles that resonate most with me are “firm and patient optimism always yields its rewards” and “all times are good times for those who know how to work and have the means to do so”. Both of these are important things to understand about business. In my business plan, I will ensure that it is focused on steady growth because with a carefully thought plan comes a strong foundation and hopefully a recipe for longevity.

Interview! with Travis Sanford - former Tour Manager for CeCe Winans

This week I interviewed Travis Sanford. Travis is the former Tour Manager for Cece Winans, a very popular Gospel singer. He worked for Ms. Winans for over 10 years and was responsible for all aspects of her tours, both nationally as well as internationally. Travis negotiated contracts with promoters, venues, and musicians and staff joining the tour. He is currently a supervisor in the Claims department at Progressive Insurance and much of his daily responsibilities still include negotiation. With the music industry in mind, Travis advised that dirty tricks are constant. He advised that his role as Tour Manager was to recognize when dirty tricks were in play and minimize the number that were able to slip through into contracts and agreements. In his experience, people will try to push in any way to see if they can get by. He recommended addressing them, albeit respectfully, and working to move past them. Travis separates the people from the problem by keeping focused on...

After hearing this, it's likely that you will never be satisfied hearing anything else lol. Okay, that was a reach...I hope you like it.

Singing for the Brain!

I've never really sat and thought of how great an impact music, particularly singing, can have on people. I'd always thought that I just had a connection with singing and enjoyed doing it or that someone enjoyed listening to music because it sounded nice. Can you imagine that singing can be more than just pleasing to the ears, but also helpful for the mind and body? The Alzheimer's Society in the UK began a program entitled "Singing for the Brain" , which allows people with dementia the opportunity to get together to sing and socialize with one another. They have found that these people show signs of improved social function as well as memory as a result of the program. Music not only makes them feel better, but it effects their brain function as well. In that same token, there are studies on children that show that children who have singing lessons or some other sort of musical instruction and practice have higher IQs and other brain functions, su...
